YouTube is introducing a feature that allows creators to organise Shorts into seasons and episodes, as serialised storytelling gains traction on the platform. The update includes custom thumbnails and sequential playback to help viewers discover and watch episodes in order.
The platform also plans to update the mobile viewing experience for members-only episodes, allowing viewers to join a channel membership while watching to unlock subsequent content. YouTube reported that microdramas generated more than 6.5 billion views in the first half of 2026, with watch time rising by more than 50% year over year. Views across Asia-Pacific markets increased by more than 70% during the same period.
YouTube said 40% of views and 30% of clicks on microdrama content occurred more than 30 days after publication, suggesting that episodes continue to attract audiences beyond their initial release. Multilingual audio, AI-powered subtitle localisation and localised metadata are also helping creators reach viewers across markets. Japan’s GOKKO CLUB and India’s Shorts Break are among the creators producing serialised short-form dramas on the platform.
