Apple expands AI features across iPhone software with iOS 27

Apple is introducing a range of artificial intelligence-powered features across its software ecosystem with iOS 27, extending AI beyond its voice assistant Siri and into everyday applications used by iPhone owners.

The updates, announced at the company's Worldwide Developers Conference earlier this month, focus on automating routine tasks, organising information and simplifying common activities such as bill splitting, password management and scheduling.

Among the new features is an AI-powered bill-splitting tool integrated with Apple Cash. Users can upload or photograph a restaurant receipt, after which the software identifies items, quantities, taxes and tips, allowing participants to divide costs and make payments through Messages and Apple Cash.

Apple is also introducing an automated password update system. The feature identifies weak or compromised passwords and can securely update them on supported websites without requiring users to manually navigate account settings.

The Messages app will gain contextual suggestions powered by Apple Intelligence. Depending on the conversation, users may receive prompts to add reminders, create calendar events or share relevant photos.

Another addition, Call Context, is designed to surface information relevant to customer service calls. For example, reservation numbers and booking details stored in Mail can be displayed during a call, reducing the need to search for information while speaking with a representative.

The Calendar app is also receiving natural language support, allowing users to create or modify events by describing them in everyday language rather than manually entering details into individual fields.

Apple is expanding the capabilities of its Shortcuts application through AI-generated automations. Users will be able to describe a task they want automated, with the system creating the workflow on their behalf.

The Home app will use AI to consolidate related smart home notifications into a single alert. The update also introduces improved search tools for locating security camera footage and other recorded events.

Safari will receive a tab organisation feature that automatically groups open tabs based on topics and browsing activity, helping users manage research and ongoing projects.

The features are currently available through Apple's developer beta programme and are expected to be released more widely later this year as part of iOS 27.
