The Indian consumer electronics and appliances industry is now entering into a new growth phase. Gone are the days when affordability was the only aspect of purchase decision; the present scenario is largely aspiration-led. Consumers are not just buying TVs, fridges and mobile phones anymore, but are buying products that make their life more convenient, productive and sustainable.

This change in consumer behaviour is transforming the retail landscape. The combination of organised retail, omnichannel retailing, premium products and growing demand outside metro cities will define the future of Indian consumption.

According to the India Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF), the retail market in India is projected to reach US$ 1.09 trillion in 2025 and cross US$ 2.36 trillion by 2030. Organised retail is projected to account for more than 35% of the market.

Aspirational Indian consumer redefining the buying trend

The rising economy of India has brought about a new group of consumers whose buying behavior is motivated more by lifestyle aspirations than needs. With growing disposable income, increased exposure to international trends, wider digital presence, and the emergence of a burgeoning middle class, electronics have become a means of lifestyle and not utility items.

Today’s consumers are much better informed before they buy. Online reviews, social media, influencer recommendations and comparison platforms are now integral to the buying journey. But the final sale is often done instore, where customers want expert advice, live demonstrations and the confidence of trusted after sales support. This evolution has strengthened the role of physical retail, transforming stores from transactional spaces into experience centres that help consumers make informed decisions.

Premiumisation becomes the new growth engine

Perhaps the biggest shift in India's electronics retail market is premiumisation. Consumers are increasingly opting for products  that include artificial intelligence, smart connectivity, improved design and greater energy-efficiency. Whether it’s AI enabled laptops, large screen smart TVs, inverter air conditioners or connected kitchen appliances, value is now defined in terms of long-term experience and not just upfront price.

Recent market trends reinforce this shift. The trend has been further accelerated by easy financing. Zero-cost EMIs, exchange offers and instant financing has democratised access to premium products allowing more households to invest in higher value technology without a substantial increase in monthly expenditure.

Organised retail builds consumer confidence

As product categories become more sophisticated, consumers increasingly value trust, authenticity and service alongside competitive pricing. Organised retailers are therefore differentiating themselves by offering seamless omnichannel experiences combining digital discovery with personalised in-store consultation, quick deliveries, installation support and comprehensive after-sales service. The store is no longer just a point of sale it has become an important touchpoint for education, engagement and customer experience.

Next wave of growth led by Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets

India’s next consumption engine is increasingly coming from outside of the metro cities

Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets are experiencing a rapid increase in the customer base with better infrastructure, rising household incomes, digital connectivity and greater product awareness. Consumers in these cities are adopting premium electronics much earlier than the previous generations, and the gap with metro consumption patterns is closing.

IBEF also estimates that these emerging markets will contribute nearly 100 million new consumers to branded and organised retail by 2030, making them one of the largest opportunities for retailers looking to expand their footprint.

For electronics retailers, success will increasingly depend on creating region-specific assortments, strengthening supply chains and delivering consistent service experiences across both metros and emerging cities.

Smart appliances are becoming everyday essentials

The definition of home appliances is also evolving. Consumers are prioritising energy-efficient, connected and intelligent appliances that simplify everyday living while reducing long-term operating costs. Refrigerators with AI-powered cooling, smart washing machines, connected air conditioners and app-enabled kitchen appliances are steadily moving from aspirational purchases to household essentials.

According to IMARC Group, the value of India’s consumer electronics market stood at US$89.48 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach US$158.44 billion by 2034, registering a CAGR of 6.56% during 2025-2034. The growth of the market is being driven by the increasing penetration of smart devices, urbanization, the expansion of digital infrastructure and government initiatives.

This means that future growth will be driven increasingly by technology upgrades rather than first time ownership.

The future belongs to experience-led retail

India’s electronics retail sector is entering an era in which products alone will no longer differentiate businesses. Consumers demand seamless experiences across digital and physical channels, personalized recommendations, transparent financing, reliable service and long-term value. Retailers that can successfully combine technology, convenience and trust will be best placed to take advantage of India’s evolving consumption landscape.

The upcoming decade of growth will be dictated not by the number of products sold but by the experiences retailers create and the relationships they forge with an increasingly discerning consumer. As consumer expectations continue to evolve, electronics and appliance retailers have an extraordinary opportunity to be trusted partners in India’s growth story.
